Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, Victoria Peak and Outlying Islands

Hong Kong sits on the Pearl River Delta in southern China, split between the Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong Island and more than 200 outlying islands. Cross Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry, ride the Peak Tram up Victoria Peak, and watch the nightly Symphony of Lights from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade. On Lantau, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car takes about 25 minutes up to the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Ferries from Central reach Lamma and Cheung Chau.

  • Airport Express to Central in 24 minutes
  • Octopus card for MTR, buses, trams and ferries
  • High-speed rail from West Kowloon Station
  • Macau ferries from Shun Tak Centre, Sheung Wan

Why visit Hong Kong

Hong Kong packs a dense harbour city, steep green hills and quiet islands into one short trip. The Star Ferry has crossed Victoria Harbour between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central for over a century, and the Peak Tram climbs to Victoria Peak, the highest point on Hong Kong Island, where the Sky Terrace 428 deck looks out in every direction. Street-level Hong Kong means Ding Ding trams along the north shore, Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan, and Temple Street Night Market and the Ladies' Market in Kowloon. On Lantau, the Big Buddha sits above Po Lin Monastery at Ngong Ping, and Tai O fishing village still has stilt houses. Ferries from Central go to Lamma for seafood and hiking and to Cheung Chau for beaches, and West Kowloon Station links the city to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and the mainland high-speed network.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Hong Kong

Central

Best for first-time visitors

On Hong Kong Island, next to Lan Kwai Fong, Soho and Hollywood Road. The Airport Express ends here at Hong Kong Station, and Star Ferry boats leave from Central Pier 7.

Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)

Best for skyline views

Tip of the Kowloon Peninsula, with the harbour promenade, Avenue of Stars, Clock Tower, Hong Kong Museum of Art and the nightly Symphony of Lights. Well connected to Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.

Causeway Bay

Best for shopping and eating

North shore of Hong Kong Island, east of Central: neon signs, large malls and a high density of restaurants and food stalls.

Wan Chai

Best for local character

Between Central and Causeway Bay on the north shore, with mid-range hotels, nightlife and a Star Ferry pier across to Tsim Sha Tsui.

Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei

Best for budget stays

Busy Kowloon market districts: the Ladies' Market, the Goldfish Market and Sneakers Street in Mong Kok, and an older, more traditional feel in neighbouring Yau Ma Tei.

Lantau and the outlying islands

Best for beaches and hiking

Lantau has the Big Buddha, Tai O, Cheung Sha Beach and Hong Kong Disneyland; Lamma and Cheung Chau offer seafood, beaches and trails, all reached by ferry or the MTR Tung Chung line.

When to go

  1. October–early December

Sunnier, drier and less humid than summer, often named the best time to visit. Good for the Peak, hikes and island trips; the Mid-Autumn Festival brings lanterns and the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance.

  2. Mid-December–February

Cool and fairly dry, with January the driest month. Chinese New Year is a peak period with a night parade and fireworks; the weeks just after the festival tend to be quieter.

  3. March–May

Warm, humid and changeable, with fog, rain and storms between sunny days. Brings the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival.

  4. Late May–September

Very hot and humid, with thunderstorms and typhoon risk; June and August are usually wettest. Hotel discounts are common, though July–August gets busy. Dragon Boat races fill the harbour and Tai O.

Practical tips

  • Buy an Octopus card at the airport, an MTR station or 7-Eleven and use it on the MTR, buses, trams, ferries and in many shops.
  • If you are staying in Tung Chung or at an airport hotel, take a hotel shuttle, local bus or taxi rather than the Airport Express.
  • Many MTR stations have several exits, so check which one is closest to your destination before you leave the platform.
  • Eating and drinking are banned on the MTR and most public transport, and you can be fined.
  • From May to November, check the Hong Kong Observatory daily, as Typhoon Signal No. 8 stops ferries, cable cars and many outdoor sights.
